The Swingles / 2016's featured performers and head clinicians

For more than half a century The Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music. The seven young singers that make up today’s London-based group are driven by the same innovative spirit that has defined the five-time Grammy® winners since they first made waves in the 1960s. With their new album Deep End (official release 18th Sept 2015), The Swingles celebrate that legacy by starting a whole new chapter.

In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music. The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched the Swingle Singers to fame. Since then their repertoire has grown to include a huge variety of music, as well as new original songs. They have released more than 50 recordings, winning five Grammy® awards and appearing on numerous film and TV soundtracks including Sex and the City and Glee.

The group’s versatility has led to collaborations with artists as diverse as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jamie Cullum and Labrinth. Luciano Berio was one of the first composers to explore the sound of the Swingles’ amplified voices in an orchestral setting, and the group continues to perform his groundbreaking Sinfonia around the world, including recent performances at the Royal Festival Hall and La Scala.

UCD MIX / opening act

UCD MIXKnown for taking the collegiate a cappella world from the Pitch Perfect movies and turning it on its head, MIX brings vocal innovation and story telling to a new level. Using world-class vocals, costuming and carefully crafted arrangements, this group of 8 young performers is changing the face of contemporary a cappella. Former BOSS and SoJam champions, MIX has won critical acclaim across the United States and Europe, most recently garnering the award of “Most Innovative Group” at the Aarhus Acapella Festival in Denmark.

AEA National High School Championships / educational. inspiring. transformative.

1491627_10204251200583692_3312201294370419815_nReady for the ultimate experience for your high school a cappella group? Apply to compete in the AEA National High School Championships for the opportunity to get live, professional feedback from a panel of certified AEA judges, and to win some exciting awards for your ensemble.

8 Finalists will be selected to compete Friday night of the NACC in the main auditorium. These groups will have access to our 24 wireless mics and a full sound system and engineer.  With HD video, lighting, and top quality sound, your group will be set up to look and sound their absolute best.

Each group will receive evaluation masterclasses on Saturday from some of Friday night’s competition judges. Regardless of who wins, all will walk away better, having experienced one of the most rewarding and memorable performances of their lives.

The total set length will be no more than 10 minutes. Each performance set will include three songs. Each group will choose two of those three songs. For the third song, each group will be paired with one of today’s top a cappella arrangers who will arrange a custom song for them. They will receive the arrangement on April 1, 2016, giving them three weeks to prepare the arrangement for the performance.
The competition will be judged by a cappella professionals who have been certified to judge in the new AEA Adjudication program.
Each group will receive evaluation masterclasses on Saturday from some of the Friday night’s competition judges.
Each group’s submissions will be blindly judged by the NACC Adjudication Committee. All groups will be scored according to the AEA scoring rubric to ensure consistent review of your group’s recorded material and quality feedback.
Once all submissions have been reviewed, the scores will be tabulated, and selections will be made for each type of performance.
Selection Notification Deadline: January 5, 2016*
Your group will know whether or not they have been chosen no later than this date.
Groups do not have to purchase passes to apply to perform. However, if selected, groups must then purchase passes for every member and any directors or other accompanying persons. Selected groups must purchase passes by January 18, 2016.
The AEA is committed to its focus on education first in everything we do. For that reason, a committee of music educators has created a new a cappella judging system which will continue to grow and evolve as necessary. The AEA is seeking to create a system in which judges can be as objective as possible and can also take detailed notes so as to give the most helpful feedback possible to each performing ensemble. For more information about this system please see the Resources section of our website or e-mail the National Championships Director, Drew Wheaton, at
