Bulldog Beats, Louisville, KY, is the first a cappella group formed at Louisville Male Traditional
High School in 2013. Highlights for the group include their Grand Champion win at the Voices
in Harmony competition (2017), where they received “Outstanding Student Arrangement” and
“Best Vocal Percussion” honors. They also qualified and competed at the National A Cappella
Education Association’s high school competition, where they placed third and took “Best Vocal
Percussion” again. Bulldog Beats performs for pep rallies, school events, district board meetings,
administrative meetings, community events, and hosts the Male High school a cappella show,
Acapocalypse, every May. This past December, they hosted an educational event produced by
The Vocal Company, where eleven local schools received instruction and classes all day.
Bulldog Beats is directed by Alexis Paxton, who decided to start a group after attending Camp A
Cappella. The students are a dedicated group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have
worked diligently to express their own ideas and creative thoughts as a musical ensemble in the
midst of a “traditional school” program. Members of the group represent all areas of academic,
athletic, and extracurricular life at Male High School.
